The Friends of the Cross Plains Library invite you to join them for another entertaining “Meet the Author” evening at 7:00 PM, Tuesday, July 19, at the Cross Plains Community Center. Local author Carol Walt will be on hand to talk about her book West Texas Classified, a collection of short stories set in the fictional town of Rosewood. Many of you already know Carol, and you’ll enjoy meeting folks like Rowdy Tate, a retired rodeo cowboy who is now looking for a female companion; Bessie Bickerman, the town gossip and busy-body; Neva Coulter, a local rancher’s wife; Bert Eggans, church deacon and self-appointed missionary; and Cora Casey, the richest woman in Rosewood and the recipient of a mysterious gift. Each story in West Texas Classified ends with an article or ad from the local newspaper telling, as Paul Harvey says, “the rest of the story.”
Carol Walt lives in the Pioneer Community where she moved five years ago after retiring from her career as a social worker. She graduated from UT-Arlington with a Bachelor’s degree in foreign languages and a Master’s in social work. Though she lived most of her life in Dallas, she spent some years working for Child Protective Services in San Angelo, and it was there that she came to love West Texas. For Carol and her husband, Eddie Walt, being able to move here where they can hunt, fish, and own horses and cattle has been the fulfillment of a dream for both of them. Carol and Eddie have three children and four grandchildren, and Carol says she has always written poetry, stories, and songs for the enjoyment of her family and friends. Because they love to travel, Carol has published travel articles in magazines and newspapers.
Everyone is welcome to attend the Meet the Author evenings, and there is no charge, but a $5 donation will be most cheerfully accepted. Many in the community may not know that the Cross Plains Public Library is not a city- or county-owned library. The Library is owned and operated by the Friends of the Cross Plains Library, a private not-for-profit organization that receives only about 20% of its funding from the City of Cross Plains and Callahan County. Donations, memorial gifts, and fund raising efforts pay for the rest of our operating expenses and capital improvements
